Litter prevention campaign recruiting consultants to help guide its efforts

(AUSTIN)—The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is recruiting 18- to 24-year-old Texans to serve as paid consultants for its Don't Mess with Texas litter prevention campaign. An application is available at www.dontmesswithtexas.org.

TxDOT's research shows 16- to 24-year-olds are the state's worst litterers. To help Don't Mess with Texas target these litterbugs, consultants will be asked for insight into their lifestyles and littering behaviors.

To earn money, panel members must submit a few online journals a month on topics ranging from their friends' infamous littering moments to their favorite CDs of all time. They will also be asked for their opinions of campaign advertisements and events.

"This is an easy way for young adults to earn some extra spending money while boosting their résumés and helping to make our state more beautiful," said TxDOT Travel Division Director Doris Howdeshell. "The group's input will be invaluable as we teach a new generation of Texans about litter prevention."

Don't Mess with Texas recruited its first round of campaign consultants last year. The group, which dubbed itself the Don't Mess with Texas Ground Support, helped shape everything from radio advertisements to the first-ever Don't Mess with Texas Campus Cleanup taking place March 27, 2004, on 17 college campuses. The Ground Support also helped plan the 2003 Don't Mess with Texas Road Tour. The Road Tour took a truck full of litter-related games and prizes to 25 Texas cities between Memorial Day and Labor Day 2003, and will hit the road with a whole new look this summer.

TxDOT's Don't Mess with Texas litter prevention campaign has been educating Texans about litter prevention since 1986. For more information, visit www.dontmesswithtexas.org.
